Security officer

Role and key duties

Security officers or security guards are usually employed to protect property, assets and/or people.

Duties may include: patrolling areas and checking doors, gates and windows for signs of unauthorised entry; watching for irregularities (e.g. fire hazards, leaking water pipes, lights left on, equipment malfunctions, unlocked security doors) and reporting incidents or problems to the appropriate authority; recording times of inspections and presence of authorised persons; responding to alarmsand checking alarm systems; providing armed escort for payroll deliveries; and observing and reporting suspects to police, or apprehending offenders when appropriate and detaining them until police arrive.

Minimum qualification required

Completion of Certificate IV in Security Operations.

Recommended qualification

Traineeship Certificate III in Security Operations..
