Labourer

Role and key duties

Labourers assist tradespeople on building and construction sites by doing a range of manual labouring jobs.

Duties may include: unloading, carrying and stacking building materials; placing tools and equipment in position; digging trenches using hand tools or jackhammers to break up rock and concrete; placing and compacting filling and quarry materials; helping to erect and dismantle scaffolding (subject to certification in some states and territories), ramps, catwalks, barricades and warning lights; and mixing, pouring and spreading concrete.

Minimum qualification required

Completion of Year 12 or equivalent (including VCE, VCAL or Certificate II VET sector accreditation).

Recommended qualification

Apprenticeship in General Construction.
