Prison officer

Role and key duties

Prison officers are involved in the day to day management of prisoners within the prison. This includes maintaining security and order as well as working with other staff to optimise opportunities for prisoner rehabilitation.

Duties may include: prisoner searches and escorts; surveillance; observing and assessing prisoner behaviour; operating a variety of security equipment; and collating information and preparing reports.

Minimum qualification required

Completion of Year 12 or equivalent (including VCE, VCAL or Certificate II VET sector accreditation).

Recommended qualification

Once employed, in-house training is provided for staff to work towards a Certificate III Correctional Practice (Custodial).
