Library assistant

Role and key duties

Library assistants maintain, sort, issue and receive library items such as books, magazines, CDs, films and associated records.

Duties may include: sorting material according to classification or catalogue numbers and returning to shelves or other storage areas; issuing items from library collections to borrowers and recording identification data and due dates; checking records to compile lists of overdue items; issuing overdue notices to borrowers; and inspecting returned items for damage and making minor repairs where sought.

Minimum qualification required

Completion of Year 12 or equivalent (including VCE, VCAL or Certificate II VET sector accreditation) or a Traineeship in Library and Information Services.

Recommended qualification

Certificate IV in Library/Information Services.
