Optometrist

Role and key duties

Optometrists perform eye examinations and vision tests to determine the presence of visual and other problems relating to the eye, and prescribe lenses, other optical aids or therapy.

Duties may include: working out the nature and extent of vision problems and abnormalities by examining patients' eyes using a variety of instruments, techniques and tests; correcting vision defects by prescribing and dispensing glasses or contact lenses; checking glasses and contact lenses for accuracy and comfort, and advising patients on how they should be worn and cared for;examining patients for manifestations of a number of eye and systemic conditions; and referring patients to appropriate specialist medical practitioners.

Minimum qualification required

Completion of a Degree in Optometry.

Degree in Optometry.
