Automotive engineer

Role and key duties

Automotive engineers are involved in almost every aspect of the design of cars and trucks, from the initial concepts through to manufacture. Broadly speaking, automotive engineers are separated into three streams product engineering, development engineering and manufacturing engineering.

Duties may include: consulting with other automotive engineers and project managers; testing new and existing automotive technology such as seatbelts and airbags; developing testing methodology; and conducting statistical analysis on different areas of cars to determine how they may be used, for example, crash tests.

Minimum qualification required

Completion of a Degree in Engineering.

Recommended qualification

Degree in Engineering/Industrial Design.
