Teacher - special education

Role and key duties

Special education teachers educate primary and secondary school children by planning and conducting an education program to assist children with disabilities, such as learning, physical, sensory, emotional or intellectual disabilities or impairments, to develop literacy, numeracy and the physical, emotional, intellectual and social growth of their students.

Duties may include: preparing daily and longer term lesson plans in accordance with curriculum guidelines taking into account students with disabilities; teaching the full range of learning areas, such as English (reading, writing, speaking and listening), mathematics, science, technology, society and environment, creative arts, and personal development, health and physical education; developing children's interests, abilities and coordination using creative activities such as art, music and sport; using computers to assist in lesson preparation, teaching and reporting; and developing and maintaining good working habits and discipline in classrooms.

Minimum qualification required

Completion of a Degree in Education with a major in Early Childhood or Primary, or Degree and a postgraduate teaching qualification with a Primary method study and an additional year of study in a special education field, or a Degree in Education with a major in Primary and Special Education.
