Early childhood teacher

Role and key duties

Early childhood teachers plan and conduct education programs for young children.

Duties may include: planning activities using a variety of materials and equipment to develop good coordination, social skills, creativity, self-expression and an interest in learning; promoting language development and self-confidence through story telling, drama, music and discussions; helping to organise and participate in excursions to enhance learning experiences; encouraging children to question and explore the world in which they live; observing children to evaluate and record their progress and to detect signs of developmental disorder, ill health or emotional disturbance; and recommending appropriate programs for further development.

Minimum qualification required

Completion of a Degree in Education or Early Childhood Education.
