Role and key duties

Retail managers plan and coordinate the operations of retail outlets, including small, independently owned specialty shops, fast food restaurants, chain store outlets, supermarkets and department stores.

Duties may include: supervising the recruitment, training, conduct and work of staff; making sure staff are taught correct sales procedures and have a good knowledge of the products they sell; maintaining a high level of customer service and making sure that complaints from customers about products or staff are quickly resolved; telling staff about new lines of stock and any changes to the prices ofstock; drawing up staff rosters; and determining the layout of fittings and merchandise so that stock is presented as attractively as possible.

Minimum qualification required

Completion of Year 12 or equivalent (including VCE, VCAL or Certificate II VET sector accreditation).

Recommended qualification

Traineeship in Retail Management.
