Viticulturalist

Role and key duties

Viticulturalists are involved in the production and study of grapes and the series of events that occur in the vineyard.

Duties may include: talking to winemakers; conducting various laboratory tests to monitor the progress of grapes, make sure of their quality and work out the correct time for harvest; organising the crushing and pressing of grapes, the settling of juice and the fermentation of grape material; supervising, managing and training winery workers involved in the production and harvesting of grapes; and managing the propagation and cultivation of the vineyards including soil management, irrigation, disease and weed control.

Minimum qualification required

Completion of a Degree in Viticultural Science and Wine Production, Applied Science with a major in Wine Science or Agricultural Science with a major in Viticultural operations.
